Um jovem chamado Zach, pobre e amante do surf e do skate, se vê forçado a abandonar seu sonho de ir para uma escola de artes para poder ajudar a sua família: o pai tem problemas de saúde e a irmã não dá a mínima para o filho, e ainda o considera como pai.
Shaun, escritor e irmão mais velho do melhor amigo de Zach, retorna a cidade para dar um tempo na busca de seu desbloqueio criativo, e acaba se interessando pelo talento artístico de Zach.
Depois de uma noite de farra e bebedeira eles trocam carinhos e se beijam, fazendo surgir uma grande história de amor gay.
O filme aborda temas que vão além do preconceito, com ênfase ao fato de se constituir uma família a partir de um casal homossexual. Tudo isso acontece na Califórnia onde a luta pelo casamento gay é constante pela busca da felicidade. O tema é tratado com delicadeza, as cenas são muito reais e não tem pornografia. O espectador acaba torcendo pelo final feliz.
De Repente, Califórnia (Shelter) é do diretor Jonah Markowitz com os atores Trevor Wright (Zach) e Brad Rowe (Shaun), e esta em cartaz nos cinemas de São Paulo.
